Officials monitoring Chromo area for flooding

A variety of local public agencies and the National Weather Service are monitoring southeastern Archuleta County today (Sunday) for possible flooding, despite the official flood warning for the area having expired.

According to Thad McKain, Archuleta County's director of emergency management, patrols are being run throughout the day today, sandbags have been prepositioned in the Chromo area and the Red Cross is on standby.

Between 5 and 7 p.m. Saturday night, McKain said the Blanco River rose about 4 feet, almost overflowing its banks before receding to its previous level overnight.

Additionally, McKain said the Forest Service is monitoring several campgrounds, including the West Fork, East Fork and Poison Park campgrounds.

A flash flood watch is in effect for southwestern Colorado through this evening (Sunday), with a chance of scattered thunderstorms in today's forecast.
