Pirates to host Monte Vista for homecoming game

Posted

The Pagosa Springs High School Pirate football team will host its first home game of the season this Friday, Sept. 20, at 7 p.m. at Golden Peaks Stadium against Monte Vista.

This week is also homecoming week for the Pirates.

After having a bye last week with no game scheduled, the Pirates go into tomorrow’s matchup with a 1-1 record on the season.

Monte Vista is coming off a 43-20 win against the North Fork Miners and now boast a 2-1 record on the season.

Coach Nathan Morales talked about the extra week of practice and how the Pirates will hopefully benefit from getting a few more days of rest before diving into the remainder of the season.

“That’s going to be a grind,” he said, noting the extra time allowed the Pirates to work on a few more things in preparation for tomorrow night’s game.

Morales explained that with it being homecoming week and the team’s first home game of the year, naturally, the team is excited to play in front of some more family members and friends.

“It’s kind of a long week. There’s a lot of stuff going on,” he added. “It’s a busy week.”

Even with all the excitement and homecoming events going on, Morales mentioned that the upperclassmen have shown what it takes to stay focused and their ability to perform.

“Our older guys, they know what it takes to stay focused and complete the task at hand,” Morales said.

He noted every school deals with the excitement of homecoming week and that Pagosa is no different in that sense.

“I’m excited for the guys this week,” Morales added.

He also mentioned Monte Vista is a “tough team” and that Pagosa was able to match up against them in a brief preseason scrimmage earlier this year.

With the scrimmage only going for 10 plays, Morales explained it’s difficult to gauge how the two teams will match up against each other in tomorrow night’s game.

“They got some good players,” he said.

Morales also noted that Monte Vista is coached well, and that their head coach has been around Colorado high school football for quite some time.

“We’re going to have to practice well this week and do everything we can to get ready for Friday night’s game,” Morales said.
