Pirates take second at Monday tournament

The Pagosa Springs High School Pirate golf team took second at Monday’s Chuck Soria Boys Invitational in Kirtland, N.M.

The Pirates finished behind the Farmington Scorpions.

Coach Mark Faber noted the Pirates avoided bad weather to play the tournament, with rain falling only at the beginning and end.

“It worked out OK,” Faber said, adding, “I think we just got lucky; it rained all around us.”

Faber noted the Pirates didn’t face as tough of competition as they typically face, but the team played OK.

“We’ve still got work to do,” he said, adding, “Once again, some really bright spots and trouble spots, and it was kind of that way all the way around.”

Johnathon Smith finished second out of the 44 golfers competing with a score of 72.

Smith shot birdie on one hole, par on 15 and bogey on one.

Faber noted Smith played well, though not as well as he can play.

Tyler Dimond shot a 90 to finish 10th, with Dimond’s effort including shooting par on five holes and bogey on nine holes.

Cedar Liverett finished 20th with a 96, which included shooting birdie on two holes, par on three and bogey on five.

Maximus Ibram finished 29th with a score of 106, shooting bogeys on six holes.

“He just keeps getting better and better,” Faber said of Ibram, noting he’s making the biggest improvement right now and is in his first year of golf.

Max Brown finished 35th with a 112, which included shooting par on one hole and bogey on two holes.

Isabel Galloway took part in the girls’ tournament, placing eighth out of 17 golfers with a score of 97, which Faber noted was positive.

Galloway’s effort included shooting par on five holes and bogey on five holes.

“She played well,” Faber said.

On Monday, Sept. 23, the Pirates will take part in the SCA Spartans Boys Golf Invite at Walking Stick Golf Course in Pueblo hosted by Swallows Charter Academy.

The course is the same course state will be played on.

“I’d love for them to play well, but I really want ‘em to get a feel for the golf course,” Faber said, adding the look at the course will give them a better idea of what they need to do to prepare for state.

He noted the team has already played in Cortez, the site of regionals, and knows how to prepare for that course.

“Hopefully it all comes together in the next couple of weeks,” Faber said.
